A recent analysis by the WHO revealed that adults over 60 accounted for 80% of COVID deaths, highlighting the significance of increasing efforts to ensure that all older persons receive all doses of COVID-19 vaccinations they require, including primary series and booster doses as recommended by WHO and national health authorities.

The US CDC has reported that the COVID-19-associated mortality among persons aged 60 years exceeded 80% of the total COVID-19 mortality in 2020 and 2021 across all income groups. In 2022, just 76% of older persons had completed primary series coverage, which is well below the WHO target, particularly in middle- and low-income nations.

The study stated that these vaccines exhibited high safety and efficacy in reducing severe COVID-19, hospitalizations, and mortality; however, despite the effectiveness of the vaccines being reported, the WHO target of 100% vaccination coverage among older adults has not yet been reached in many regions of the world. The US CDC research also emphasizes the significance of booster doses of vaccines.

Several nations currently deliver three vaccine doses: a primary dose, a secondary dose, and a booster dose. Only a few countries additionally provide the vaccine in two doses.Medical professionals in India said that a fourth dosage of the COVID vaccination is currently not required in the country.
